AirTag 2 vs. Xiaomi Tag for Dogs: Which “Find My” Tracker Wins?
When you’re losing sight of your dog in a dog park, on your off-leash hike or even in the garden, is definitely a heart-stopping moment.
If you don’t have a real dog GPS tracker, but have been interested in some different type of options… then while googling you might have come across with questions like: “Can I use a Xiaomi Tag to find my lost dog?”, “Is the AirTag 2 louder than the original?” and “Does Xiaomi Tag work with the Apple Find My network?”.
Well, if that’s the case, then you’re in luck! Because in addition to this blog post we’ve made a full Youtube video exactly about that. We tested the volume levels, talked about the setup process the pros and cons and a lot more. So do check it out. 👇
Bluetooth trackers: AirTag 2 vs Xiaomi Tag
So, if you are on the hunt of a bluetooth tracker instead of jumping straight into the deep waters of Dog GPS trackers and subscriptions, then as a no-subscription “dog” trackers AirTag 2 and Xiaomi Tag are quite popular.
The famous Apple AirTag 2 was released just this year, in 2026. And luckily for us, it does have a couple of upgrades that are worth talking about.
First the Bluetooth range is better than it is with the AirTag 1. Secondly the sound feature or the speaker is about 50% louder. And yes, you CAN hear the difference. It isn’t anything extraordinary, but it is definitely sharper.
Now another thing with the Apple AirTag 2 is that it still remains locked in its ecosystem. Which is awesome if you have an iPhone - it makes connecting the tracker seamless. But it also means less coverage/signal when wanting to track something… or your dog.
On the flip side though, the new Xiaomi Tag has become kind of a budget friendly “hero” of 2026. Why? Well, the biggest kind of a shocker is that Xiaomi Tag not only works Android, but also the compatibility with iPhone is almost as seamless as with the AirTag 2.
So yes, we did test if the Xiaomi Tag works with an iPhone and yes, it does work perfectly! Also it means A LOT MORE SIGNAL. Because you’ll not just get signal from iPhones, but also Android devices.
The sound is kind of unique and louder than both of the AirTags.
But when you’re considering and AirTag 2 for a dog collar, then you already need an extra device.
Whether it’s the keyring product from Apple, or a third party one (we use a Cityway case for AirTag), but either way you need to do another purhase just to secure it onto things (or a dog).
Xiaomi Tag however already has this “built-in” loop, so securing it onto something like keys or even dog’s collar, is easy. Also Xiaomi Tag is water resistant, which means that it can handle a splash quite well.
Bluetooth tracker vs real dog GPS
Let’s also quickly mention the elephant in the room - a bluetooth tracker is NOT a real dog GPS tracker.
Simple bluetooth trackers like the AirTag 2 and Xiaomi Tag relies in other phones being nearby to kind of report a location of the tag. But if your dog runs off into a forest or a rural area, then there is very little chance that a bunch of hikers are also there with their phones…
This is where subscription based dog trackers like the SatellAI or Tractive (these are our current favourites, but there are plenty more on the market).
So just keep in mind that if you are always in the city area, then giving the Xiaomi Tag or AirTag 2 a try, might not be a bad idea. Especially if you can’t afford another subscription.
But if you are looking for an actually dog tracker, then you should opt for real dog GPS trackers like the SatellAI or Tractive.
AirTag 2 or Xiaomi Tag: Which one should you buy?
Well, these two devices are not too different. Yes, the Xiaomi Tag is cheaper, it has a louder sound, good casing with a built-in loop and works with Android AND iPhones, so we crowned Xiaomi Tag as the winner.
But when you are an avid iPhone user, like the ecosystem and maybe you already have a case or a dog collar that has a sturdy pocket for the AirTag - then sure, why not get the AirTag 2 instead.
At then end of the day the choice is yours! But do keep in mind that even though these two devices are good as a backup or in a busy city environment, then they definitely don’t replace a good dog GPS device.
