Do robot vacuums work well with dog hair?
Every owner knows that if you share your home with your dog, the everyday picture looks like this: fur on the floor, fur on the couch, fur on the clothes and flying in the air… even after you’ve just vacuumed.
For a lot of us, keeping up with cleaning the dog hair can be like a full time job or more like an everyday hassle. So at one point you just might give up and accept that this is the reality or you’ll be looking into something like a robot vacuum cleaner.
By now, we have chosen a little bit of both. 😅 But let’s talk about what robot vacuum cleaner we use as proud Siberian Husky owners, if we think it is worth getting one at all and can the robot vacuum cleaner actually handle all the dog hair.
Why is cleaning dog hair an everyday hassle?
When it comes to dog hair, it isn’t just about a little shedding - it’s the endless shedding. Short dog hair crawls under every fabric fiber and long dog hair flies around the house in every corner.
On top of all the dog hair, our four legged friends bring home dust, sand and of course can leave occasional muddy paw prints as well. So the floors often might need more than just a quick sweep.
Now, of course the regular vacuum gets the job done and pretty well. It just requires you to drag it out, plug it in and then do all the cleaning yourself.
That is one of the good things about robot vacuum cleaners - they can be like your personal “Santa’s little helper”, while you’re on a walk, sipping coffee or enjoying good book on the couch.
Robot vacuums and dog hair
When you ask, if robot vacuum cleaner actually can handle the dog hair, then of course every dog owner would have their own answer for that. But let me tell you ours. We have a 7 year old Siberian Husky and by now we have had our pretty basic robot vacuum for about 3 years now and guess what - the vacuum still works well.
We have the Schbot S8 and like I said, it is not the flashiest or newest model out there, but still, it has become a nice little helper in our household with decent amount of dog hair every day.
How to choose the best robot vacuum for you?
Here are a few things to keep in mind, when you’re looking to buy a robot vacuum yourself:
Advanced features - like poop detection, if you have a new puppy or a dog who might sometimes to the deed inside your home.
Suction strength - our Schbot S8 is pretty decent, but if you need something more powerful, then maybe look into something like from the Dreame L series, like the Dreame L10s Ultra or something from their newer releases like the Dreame L40 Ultra, which are more mid-price ones, but definitely newer than our Schbot S8. Also the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra should be powerful enough to get dog hair from thicker carpets as well, but is also at the higher price range compared with the Schbot and Dreame robot vacuums.
Smart mapping/ navigation - our own Schbot S8 is pretty average with that. If some dog toys lay on the floor or when we don’t lift our curtains, the machine will get stuck and then it’ll stop it’s cleaning and just lay there…stuck in the curtains. 🥲 The newer robot vacuum cleaners have more advanced navigation. So you can choose the no-go zones or specifically pick areas that tend to collect dog hair.
Maintenance - we have to manually clean our robot vacuum cleaner after every session. And I’ll be honest - it is pretty annoying sometimes. But when I look at the clean floors, it doesn’t seem too bad. On the market you will find some pretty awesome robot vacuum cleaners with self-emtying docks. Some pricier higher tech ones will even clean the main rollers, that you generally would have to clean yourself anyway.
Extras - maybe something like cleaning scheduling feature, if you want your floors to be super clean by the time you arrive home from work. Or the ability of raising the bristles for fluffier carpets etc.
Do robot vacuums work well with dog hair?
So, to answer the question, our short answer is - yes… if you pick the right one for you and keep realistic expectations. Robot vacuums, while being very useful little helpers, they do not replace deep cleaning or outdo most of regular vacuums. But one thing is for sure, it will cut down on the daily furballs rolling across your floor.
For us personally, the Schbot S8 has been enough to keep the dog hair more under control. Are we thinking of a future upgarde - yes, but for now our busy robot vacuum does what it needs to do and we’re fine with that.
But if you know that you need something more powerful, with better extra features or more precise mapping system, then definitely look the ones like Roborock, Roomba or Dreame to see if their mid-to-higher price tags are worth it for you.
At the end of the day, we would say that the best thing about a robot vacuum isn’t the fact that it’s “perfect”, but the fact that it gives our family more free time to enjoy together, instead of vacuuming around the house like crazy.
