Got a new puppy? Try these helpful products for potty training
When getting a new puppy, the first things that come in mind are - cute fluffy tails and adorable puppy eyes. In reality though, puppies are like level 0 out of 100.
There are a few main things to teach to new puppies when we first bring them home. And one of them is puppy potty training. Here we have some helpful products that can be super beneficial if you are just starting to teach your puppy its new potty training schedule.
Depending on your puppy, you may or may not need some or all of these products, but they can be very useful especially in the very beginning.
Pocket Puppy School app
You know the saying “by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”. When getting a new and a very young puppy, preparation is what helps you to be one step ahead.
Our Pocket Puppy School creator and certified dog trainer Ki has made comprehensive topics specifically for new puppy owners. So definitely give them a look already before you bring your new puppy home.
Puppy playpen
Now, if you are walking around the house and you’re busy and can’t directly supervise your puppy, then the puppy playpen can be your helpful assistant.
Since it is enclosed safe space, then firstly your puppy can have enough freedom to play for some time alone, it also means your puppy can’t hurt itself or break anything while you’re busy.
The puppy playpen also helps to prevent new puppy from making it a new habit to hide pee and poo behind the couch, curtains or randomly around the house.
The puppy house-leash
Puppy house-leash is often times over looked. It is not a regular walking leash. It doesn’t have a handle, it is very lightweight and typically it is quite a lot shorter than any other walking leash.
The puppy house-leash helps you monitor your puppy and keep it within arm’s reach.
That way you can react quickly, guide your puppy outside, keep it from biting your arms or jumping up at you.
For new puppy owners this really can be a helpful little secret weapon.
Pee pads
Even with the best monitoring, most likely accidents might still happen. So having some pee pads in stock at home is a good idea.
Of course the main thing should be teaching your puppy to pee and poo outside and not inside. But if you are just starting out and learning your dog’s routine and how long your puppy holds its bladder before needing to go out, pee pads will definitely come in handy.
Puppy diapers
Yes, you read that right. There are special diapers for puppies - both for boys and girls. Because let’s be honest, sometimes despite your best efforts, puppy potty training can be more challenging than expected.
In more trickier cases, puppy diapers can come in handy - not all day every day like with newborn babies.
During daytime try to do your best to monitor your dog’s movements, teach your puppy the new potty schedule and make your pup understand that the reason you take them outside, is to pee and poo there.
But at nighttime, when it can be a lot trickier to keep an eye on your puppy - give puppy diapers a try. Then the first thing in the morning you can take your dog out to do its business there.
There are two different types of puppy diapers. “female diapers”, like you see on the picture, are more similar like baby diapers. So if your puppy pees or poos, it will be inside of the diaper. “Male diapers” only go around the body, so if your dog does happen to poo, the diaper won’t catch it.
We have tried both versions and even for the male puppy, the “female diapers” were actually better. So choose the one you feel would be more helpful for you.
Natural enzyme cleaner
You might ask - why enzyme cleaner and not anything else. Well, of course you can use whatever you already have at home. But what makes enzyme cleaner different, is that they break down organic compounds in pee at a molecular level.
That means that it eliminates the odor and with that helps to prevent your puppy from peeing there again.
Progress matters more than perfection
No two puppies are the same. And especially with potty training, it can be super smooth sailing, but it also might be a messy rollercoaster.
Dog training and especially puppy training, is never really a straight line. Some puppies catch on in a week, other take way longer, and that is okey.
What actually matters the most is that by being prepared, you set your puppy up to succeed, you stay consistent, try to catch accidents early and always celebrate even the smallest wins. 🩵
